03’s merry band of beverage reviewers taste-test the latest and greatest beverages.

100 percent organic

The first certified organic single malt Scotch whisky since 2006, this is the latest of Benromach’s acclaimed ‘Contrasts: Organic’ series. Distilled in 2013, this expression of unpeated spirit has been matured in virgin American oak. Offering an aromatic and sweet fragrant oaky note, rich with vanilla and toffees, the nose is creamy and malty as well. The mouthfeel is creamy again, with banana custard moving to coffee and cocoa flavours. Fully accredited by the UK Soil Association, this is a rare example of totally organic single malt Scotch whisky

Magic what yuzu

Just in time for summer, Kiwi gin brand Scapegrace has added another juicy flavour to its RTD stable – Gin & Soda Yuzu Lemon – combining its premium, hand-crafted distilled gin with locally cultivated yuzu (a lumpylooking but deliciously tart and fragrant citrus fruit, for those unfamiliar) and a soda base. With an initial subtle dryness that balances with a lingering lemon squash finish, we say move over G&T, you’ve got competition.

Merlot for the win

Looking for a top drop of red without the top price tag? Taylors Estate’s Merlot recently took top honours at the NZ International Wine Show, receiving the Trophy for Champion Merlot – and comes in at just under $20. The medium-bodied merlot has red berry, plum and cherry characters, with the soft, velvety texture and grainy tannins through the mid-palate contributing to a long-lasting finish.

Drink the uncommon

For when you fancy some fizz without popping the cork on a bottle, Kiwi entrepreneur and co-founder of The Uncommon Hannah Sweeney and business partner Anna Campbell have worked with one of the country’s top winemakers, Digger Hennessy, to create a snazzy little wine in a can. Available in either fruity, zesty, sparkling sauvignon blanc or deliciously dry, French-style pinot noir rosé bubbles (our pick) and both made in Marlborough, the 250ml cans are perfect for summer picnics, or whenever you need a more portable option.
